TARGET 9

PROVIDE FAIR HOUSING

ABOUT TARGET 9:

As an administration, we will prioritize addressing the housing shortage on our campus because too many students have had to scramble to find last-minute housing options, especially students with accessibility needs and international students. While we can’t guarantee on-campus housing for everyone, we aim to provide more security in the housing application process by introducing priority and hardship housing options.

TARGET-SPECIFIC POLICIES:

Goal 9.1 – Provide Priority Housing for International Students

Carolina has over 2,600 international students from more than 110 countries, and with limited on-campus housing, many students are left on the housing waitlist, especially as incoming classes grow. International students face unique challenges when securing off-campus housing, such as complex paperwork and limited options due to the distance from campus and restrictions on having a car. The Alvarez Administration will collaborate with Carolina Housing and the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to improve access to housing for international students. We will advocate for housing solutions that address these challenges and create a more inclusive environment for international students, including flexible housing options and enhanced resources for those living off-campus.

Goal 9.2 – Expanding First-Year Programming and Support Systems to Apply to All First-Year Carolina Students

The Alvarez Administration believes that transfer students face challenges similar to those of incoming freshmen and should have access to the same resources. We will advocate for all first-year programming, such as orientation, peer mentorship, and social activities, to be extended to transfer students. Additionally, we will work to expand the Transfers United Residential Learning Program (RLP) by increasing its visibility and participation. By ensuring that transfer students are included in first-year resources, we can help them transition smoothly and build a supportive community. We will also introduce transfer-specific initiatives, such as workshops on credit transfer, ConnectCarolina, and opportunities to get involved at Carolina.

Goal 9.3 – Implementing an anonymous Resident Advisor Reporting System

To ensure a safe and professional environment within residence halls, the Alvarez Administration proposes the creation of anonymous Resident Advisor (RA) feedback forms. These forms will allow students to voice concerns or provide feedback about their RAs in a confidential manner. The anonymous Resident Advisor Reporting System will be accessible through HeelLife and introduced during move-in orientation. RA managers will review the feedback and address it appropriately. Additionally, we will amend the RA hiring process to require two letters of recommendation to ensure applicants are trusted and responsible.
