TARGET 4

PROTECT STUDENTS AND
THEIR VOICES

ABOUT TARGET 4:

Safety has been a serious concern on campus for the past two years, and the university’s administration has taken a reactive approach to its adoption of safety measures for both physical and mental well-being. We will prioritize representing student concerns in its discussions with the administration, including through expanding the executive branch’s “safety committee,” and implementing infrastructure checks, ensuring that safety infrastructure on campus is checked for viability at frequent intervals.

TARGET-SPECIFIC POLICIES:

Goal 4.1 – Safety Infrastructure Checks

Ensuring campus safety is a critical responsibility. Malfunctioning safety systems, like emergency sirens and cameras, leave individuals vulnerable during crises. To address this, we will mandate regular maintenance checks of safety infrastructure, including sirens, cameras, panic buttons, and lighting. Additionally, we will collaborate with Alert Carolina and student organizations to conduct emergency drills, test system functionality, and train students and staff on using safety resources effectively. These measures will enhance preparedness and create a secure campus environment.

Goal 4.2 – Increasing Language Options in Alert Carolina Messaging System

Effective emergency updates are crucial for campus safety, but Alert Carolina currently provides updates only in English and Spanish, limiting accessibility for non-English or non-Spanish speakers. The Alvarez Administration will partner with NC SAVAN, which offers translations in over 100 languages, to expand Alert Carolina’s language options. This initiative ensures all students, staff, and faculty receive critical information, aligning with UNC’s mission to support its diverse community.

Goal 4.3 – Expanding the Executive Branch’s Safety Committee

The Alvarez Administration will prioritize campus safety by expanding the Executive Branch’s Safety Committee into a dedicated Student Safety Committee. This committee will oversee safety infrastructure checks, expand Alert Carolina’s language accessibility, and promote free speech policies. By separating safety from mental wellness, we can allocate more resources to each. The committee will meet bi-monthly, with monthly feedback sessions open to all students, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement for a safer Carolina.

Goal 4.4 – Free Speech Policy and Students’ Rights

Creating a transparent and supportive campus environment is essential for student well-being, particularly regarding free speech policies. To ensure students are aware of their rights and the guidelines governing demonstrations, the Alvarez Administration will collaborate with administrators to review and clarify free speech policies, ensuring alignment with the First Amendment and university standards. Additionally, we will partner with Carolina Legal Services to develop and promote an accessible “Know Your Rights” webpage, empowering students with the information needed to engage in peaceful and informed demonstrations.
