TARGET 2
ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH
ON CAMPUS
ABOUT TARGET 2:
Furthering the university's efforts to acknowledge and advocate for student mental health is paramount to our campaign. While the introduction of wellness days and mental health services at CAPS are steps in the right direction, our team aims to expand resources for Carolina’s student body. We strive to increase awareness of mental health inside and outside the classroom, offer more education and training to faculty on handling mental health situations, and foster an environment where mental health conversations are encouraged, heard, and supported.
TARGET-SPECIFIC POLICIES:
Goal 2.1 – Mental Health Promotion Among Faculty and Staff
Encourage faculty across all departments to participate in programs like Mental Health First Aid and QPR training. Promote a culture of mental health awareness by including resource information in course syllabi and fostering open dialogue about mental health from the start of classes.
Goal 2.2 – Peer Support Groups Under CAPS
Implement a 24-hour peer support hotline staffed by trained peer support workers (PSWs). Create opportunities for PSWs to assist CAPS and Campus Health, ensuring they are well-trained to provide empathetic and effective support.
Goal 2.3 – Enhancing CAPS Outreach
Partner with external organizations like the Association for University and College Counseling Center Outreach to strengthen CAPS programs. Increase student input in outreach initiatives, expand workshop topics, and raise awareness of CAPS services via updated digital platforms.
Goal 2.4 – Expanding External Discourse on Mental Health
Host events featuring experts and advocates to discuss mental health topics and broaden campus perspectives. Collaborate with external organizations to create interdisciplinary conversations, ensuring inclusivity across age groups and expertise levels.
