TARGET 10

SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL

SUSTAINABILITY

ABOUT TARGET 10:

Carolina has numerous ongoing sustainability projects, including through Carolina Dining Services or the Residence Hall Association. However, there are very few lines of communication between project leaders and student government. The Alvarez Administration will work to unify the efforts of student government and student organizations by strengthening communication between involved parties to address important environmental initiatives such as water conservation and safety.

TARGET-SPECIFIC POLICIES:

Goal 10.1 – Collaborate with Campus Organizations to Further Environmental Advocacy and Facilitate Meaningful Change

The Alvarez campaign is committed to supporting organizations working towards environmental sustainability at Carolina. We will collaborate with groups like Epsilon ETA, Edible Campus, Sustainable Business Club, Solar Equity, Carolina Green Team, and Carolina 360 to strengthen their efforts and create a more sustainable future. By providing visibility, financial resources, and institutional support, we aim to amplify their impact. Additionally, we will maintain open communication with environmental organizations and ensure that at least one member of the Alvarez Administration’s Environmental Affairs committee attends monthly meetings to stay informed on their initiatives and support their goals.

Goal 3.2 – Creating Live Accessible Mapping Options

Improving transparency in food sourcing within Carolina Dining Services (CDS) is essential for empowering students to make informed choices. Our administration will collaborate with CDS to enhance environmental practices, focusing on waste reduction and sustainability. This includes providing CDS employees with educational tools to promote environmentally friendly habits, reducing food waste through composting, and advocating for the removal of seed oils to support healthier diets. By fostering connections between CDS and sustainability organizations on campus, we will unify efforts to improve campus dining. Additionally, clear labeling of environmental impacts and farm-to-table transparency will be prioritized, alongside ensuring all takeaway utensils and cups are compostable or recyclable.

Goal 3.3 – Improving Housing and Academic Building Accessibility

The Alvarez Administration is committed to promoting water conservation across campus to reduce waste and ease pressure on local water supplies. We will advocate for water conservation education and explore rainwater harvesting for landscaping with Grounds Services. Additionally, we will push for the installation of water-saving technologies, such as low-flow toilets and irrigation systems, in dorms and other campus facilities, collaborating with the RHA to implement these solutions.

Goal 3.4 – Introducing Accessible Sports

Safe drinking water is a basic human right, and no student, staff, or visitor should ever have to question the safety of water on campus. To ensure this, we will advocate for annual mandatory testing of all water resources, executed by the Department of Energy Management. To save costs, we will encourage the use of UNC’s in-house labs for water testing. We’ll also provide students with opportunities to get involved in water testing, fostering engagement and awareness. Additionally, we will push for a reallocation of funds to support water filters in common-area fountains.

Goal 3.5 – Expanding Language Accessibility
Past environmental subsidies have often supported projects that were underfunded, poorly planned, or misaligned with long-term sustainability goals, resulting in inefficiencies and minimal impact. Many of these initiatives focused on short-term gains or met immediate regulatory goals without establishing a foundation for lasting change. The Alvarez Administration will redirect resources from ineffective projects to those that align with UNC’s long-term sustainability objectives, prioritizing initiatives that produce measurable outcomes in energy efficiency, waste reduction, carbon neutrality, water conservation, and biodiversity preservation.
